Defibrillator on public road saves life of 21 year old holiday maker in Albufeira

A 21-year-old young man, on holiday in Albufeira, had his life restored to him this Saturday, thanks to quick access to a defibrillator installed on the public road, enabling him to be resuscitated by local people.

The young man, from Famões (Odivelas), was swimming in a private pool in Santa Eulália area at lunchtime on Saturday when he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Civilians present initiated resuscitation, grabbing the AED (automated external defibrillator) from the street outside and calling 112 for assistance.

The Municipality of Albufeira has 23 AED’s on the streets, having been the first Municipality in the region to have this equipment, in 2018.

The AED equipment is in specially prepared,  signposted booths, next to anchor buildings, namely, some municipal structures, and in places with a large influx of people. 
Among other locations, the AED’s are located at Rua do Município (opposite the City Hall), Albufeira Sports Pavilion / Municipal Stadium, Municipal Swimming Pools / Imortal FC training camps / Quinta da Palmeira, Av. Sá Carneiro (Oura) , Avenida da Liberdade (Farmácia Alves Sousa), Av. 25 de Abril (GNR post in downtown), Pau da Bandeira Viewpoint, Parish of Ferreiras (roundabout), Parish of Guia (next to the chapel), Parish of Olhos de Água (former Parish Council) and Paderne Parish (Praça Nova).
