3.1 EARTHQUAKE RECORDED NEAR OLHÃOAn earthquake registering 3.1 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning, at 8:11 am, off the Algarve coast at Olhão.

The epicenter of the quake was recorded in the Gulf of Cádiza at 18 kilometers deep, according to information from the website of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) .

According to the IPMA’s initial statement, the epicenter was located about 50 km southeast of Olhão, whose initial information advanced to an “earthquake of magnitude 3.3 (Richter)”, but states that “the preliminary determinations are usually corrected later, for the integration of more information “.

The IPMA recalls that “the location of the epicenter of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process that depends on the data set, the algorithms and the seismic wave propagation models. Different agencies can produce slightly different results”.

Yesterday, a minor magnitude earthquake (3.0 on the Richter scale) was felt on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.

The Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA) reported that, according to the Azores Seismovolcanic Surveillance and Information Center (CIVISA), the earthquake was recorded at 10:40 am (11:40 am in Lisbon), with an epicenter at about 18 kilometers south / southeast of Ribeira Quente.
