A student was killed and five were reported missing in Portugal after a wave engulfed them on a beach south of Lisbon, emergency services said Sunday.
The group, students at a university in the capital, had rented a house for a weekend break at Moinho de Baixo beach in the Sesimbra region.
Carlos Manuel Lopes da Costa, an official at the nearby Setubal port, said the students, all aged between 21 and 25, were “near the area where the waves crash when they were swept away”.
One member of the group was able to get to shore and call for help.
Rescuers found the body of one student on Sunday morning and continued the search for the others with the help of an army helicopter.
