Two-thirds of EU adults are fluent in a foreign language

English is also the most popular language studied by EU students.

In 2011, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 83 percent of primary and lower secondary students, and 94 percent of upper secondary students, studied English. French, German, and Spanish were the next most popular languages studied.

Eurostat released the data on Sept. 26, the European Day of Languages.

This event is designed to promote the importance of language learning, and to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of the EU.
