Portugal’s top financial daily suspends paper edition

Published on 18/03/2016

Portugal's leading business daily Diario Economico on Friday said it had suspended its paper edition owing to financial difficulties.

“We all hope this is a temporary suspension,” the paper, owned by the Ongoing media group, said on its website where it indicated Friday’s edition would be the last until further notice.

The paper, which launched in 1989 and has around 150 staff, said it is going through “a difficult period” but added its TV and Internet site would continue as normal.

Staff went on a 24-hour strike earlier this month to protest at late salary payments.

Paper circulation for the daily stood at 13,800 last year, just ahead of main rival Jornal de Negocios.
