Portugal wall collapse kills five

Five workers were killed in the collapse of a wall in a market building of the southern Portuguese city of Setubal during building work on Tuesday, emergency services said.

“The wall came down on six workers, but one of them was inside a backhoe and escaped unscathed with only minor abrasions. The other five were buried and died,” said regional civil defence official Rui Costa.

He said the cause of the accident at 0500 GMT was not yet known.

The market of Setubal, dating from 1876, had been closed for several months for renovations, said the Lusa news agency.
