Firefighters in Portugal found the decomposing remains of the previous owner on the kitchen floor after the new owner called police to help her gain access to the property, a report said Wednesday.
The property at Sintra in the Lisbon suburbs was sold by auction after the elderly owner apparently disappeared in 2002.
Neighbour Aida Martins, 82, said she became concerned after post started to pile up but that police did not want to force the door.
Eventually, the authorities stepped in and the apartment was put up for sale at auction.
The new owner called police when she was unable to get into the property, and they forced the entrance.
The skeletal remains of the woman’s dog was also founds beside her, said local authority official Luis Pimentel.
