Portugal’s Summer fires – 112th victim confirmed

Published on 29/01/2018

The number of victims of last year's fires in Portugal has risen to 112.

The Institute of Legal Medicine compared DNA samples given by the family of a missing man and has just confirmed that bones discovered in December belonged to Rui Costa.

Human remains were located on December 20th last year by a British couple walking along a riverside near where 49-year-old Rui Costa had lived.

Judicial Police inspectors went to the scene and bone samples were sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Coimbra.

After exhaustive examinations, it has been determined that the remains were those of Rui Costa and that he had died trying to escape the fires of October 15th and 16th.

Having returned from living in Holland, Costa had settled in a small house on the slopes of Folgosinho, in the Serra da Estrela natural park.
