Eleven people were injured when two trains collided late Monday near Coimbra in central Portugal, emergency services said.

Portuguese media and rescuers said a train linking Lisbon to the major northern city of Oporto smashed into the back of a regional train near the town of Alfarelos.

The victims, suffering only light injuries, were rushed to a hospital in Coimbra.

Railway traffic between the capital and Oporto was disrupted.
