Cycling: Jaksche takes first Paris-Nice stage

VANVES, France, March 7 (AFP) – Germany’s Jorg Jaksche, of the CSC team, won the opening stage of the Paris-Nice race on Sunday, a 13.2km time-trial from Chaville to Vanves.

Jaksche finished four seconds ahead of Italy’s Davide Rebellin and Dutchman Erik Dekker while world time-trial champion David Millar of Scotland was 13 seconds off the pace.

Kazakhstan’s Alexandre Vinokourov, the winner of the last two editions of the race, was 26 seconds behind Jaksche.

“I put in a lot of work this winter on time-trials,” said Jaksche.

“We have been here for two days which has allowed me a good look at the course amd that served me well.”

Meanwhile, Millar said he was content with his performance on the opening day.

“I am very happy with my performance,” said the Scot. “I didn’t want to take any risks.”
