Avalanche alert in French Alps

GRENOBLE, France, Jan 12 (AFP) – France’s national weather service on Monday issued a warning to skiers and winter sports enthusiasts in the Alps that there was a maximum risk of avalanches throughout the mountain range.

Heavy snowfall combined with strong winds and significant accumulation have made conditions extremely dangerous, with avalanches occurring in several areas, according to a Meteo France bulletin.

At lower altitudes, heavy rainfall has destabilized the mountain snows, Meteo France said, raising the risk alert in the Alps to the maximum level and urging all skiers, snowshoers, hikers and even drivers to act with caution.

Three snowboarders were killed and one hurt Saturday in two separate avalanches. A 24-year-old American skier was reported missing in Chamonix on Sunday after venturing off-piste in a high-risk area.
