A general strike has stranded some 3,500 travellers in French Polynesia, authorities said on Sunday.

The strike began on Thursday and some travellers have been sleeping at the airport since hotels are full, authorities said, calling on locals to put stranded tourists up for free.

About 2,000 of those stranded were on the island of Tahiti.

The spokesman for the collective of unions leading the strike, Patrick Galenon, told AFP they were protesting against job cuts and hardship caused by the economic crisis.
