Polynesia flights resume after strike

Air traffic from French Polynesia started resuming Tuesday after the end of a general strike that stranded about 4,500 travellers, authorities said.

Passengers waiting for flights to Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo and Auckland had been blocked for days in the strike that began on Thursday and some travellers were sleeping at the airport because hotels were full.

About 2,500 of those stranded were on the island of Tahiti.

"It will take a few days for all the passengers to take their flights," said Alain Berquez, director of the operating company Tahiti Airports.

"We had three planes arrive during the night and by tomorrow we will have one departure to Tokyo, one to Los Angeles and two to Paris," he said.

Unions were protesting against job cuts and hardship caused by the economic crisis.
