Libyan rebels voices thanks for French arms

Libya's rebel council has voiced its thanks to France, amid a furor over revelations that Paris had air-droped weapons to rebels fighting to oust Moamer Kadhafi.

"There should be no doubt that Libyans in the Nafusa mountain area are alive and safe today thanks to a combination of heroic Libyan bravery and French wisdom and support," Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, the vice president of the National Transitional Council, said late Thursday.

France has cast the weapons drop to Berber fighters in mountains south of Tripoli as a move to help Libyans defend themselves, but Russia and some African nations accused Paris of going beyond UN authorisation.
