Draguignan - French authorities evacuated 100 people from their homes Sunday as they made safe a giant American bomb dating from World War II uncovered on a building site, officials said.

Four mine clearance experts defused the 500 kilo (1,100 pound) bomb found earlier in the week in the southeastern town of La Seyne-sur-Mer, and the locals living nearby were set to be able to return to their homes later Sunday.

The bomb was due to be transported to a nearby military camp to be destroyed.
