French PM says strikers should respect new pension law

France's Prime Minister Francois Fillion tried to turn the page Wednesday on a series of strikes and angry street protests, urging opponents of pension reform to respect a newly passed law.

"The law of the Republic should now be respected by all," Fillon said, in a a statement issued after the National Assembly passed the final draft of a bitterly contested law to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

Trade unions have vowed to go ahead with a national day of strikes and street rallies on Thursday to protest the reform, despite its approval by parliament, although there are signs the tide of protest is ebbing.
