France to help farmers over drought

Government compensation for drought-hit French farmers will run to several hundred millions of euros, Agriculture Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Tuesday.

With drought gripping most of France, compensation to farmers by agricultural disaster funds will run to "several hundred millions of euros," the minister said at a news conference.

That only accounts for payouts to livestock producers, who do not have the possibility to take out drought insurance, unlike grain growers.

Limits on water use are currently in place in over half of France's administrative departments, with the tightest level of restrictions already in place in nearly a quarter of them.
