Rescuers searching for a 22-year-old French woman missing in the Australian outback have found the word "lost" written in the sand.

  SYDNEY, Feb 28, 2008 (AFP) - Rescuers searching for a 22-year-old French
woman missing in the Australian outback have found the word "lost" written in
the sand in an area where she disappeared, police said Thursday.
The woman set out alone from Kings Canyon in central Australia on Sunday
morning, telling Parks and Wildlife rangers that she planned to complete a
22-kilometre (14-mile) bush walk and return the following day.
A ground and air search was launched when she failed to check in and police
said they had also found a set of footprints and a jacket they believe belong
to the woman.
The word "lost" was found west of Kathleen Springs in the popular tourist
area, Senior Sergeant Michael Potts told the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation.
"We believe she's probably got herself a little bit confused and now
heading in the opposite direction," he said.
The woman was equipped with a tent, food and water when she set out but
"police are certainly concerned for her welfare," a spokeswoman told AFP from
the outback town of Alice Springs on Wednesday.
