US holds killer convicted in France

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 24 (AFP) – A US citizen found guilty of a 1993 murder in France has been arrested in California, police said Monday.

Barrie Taylor was tried in absentia for the murder in Versailles.

“She was arrested Thursday by US Marshalls in Capitola,” outside San Francisco, US Marshalls spokesman Jason Wong told AFP.

The US District Court of Northern California issued an arrest warrant on behalf of France on Wednesday.

“As soon as we were aware there was an arrest warrant, we started our investigation and tracked her down to her home residence,” Wong said.

Taylor was sentenced to 30 years for beating her lover’s wife to death with a hammer.

Police caught her trying to bury murdered schoolteacher Roxane Pavageau in the victim’s garden.

She was jailed for five years awaiting trial. While on a medical release from prison in May 1998, she left France illegally in December to return to California.
