UK skiers rescued from burning coach

LYON, France, Jan 18 (AFP) – A French driver whose coach caught fire while it was in a long tunnel in the French Alps succeeded in evacuating his 43 British skiing passengers safely before the vehicle was completely consumed in flames, the fire services told the media on Sunday.

The rear end of the coach caught fire while it was still one kilometre (0.6 miles) from the exit of the Dullin tunnel in the Savoie region.

The driver got all the passengers to move to the front of the coach while he continued driving and evacuated them as soon as he reached the exit, on the hard shoulder of the motorway, the fire services said.

The coach had completely burnt out by the time the rescue services arrived.

The tunnel was closed temporarily and the British passengers continued their journey to the ski resort in another coach.
