PARIS, Feb 2 (AFP) – A journalists’ strike at state-owned Radio France that has left French listeners without their daily dose of news for a week looked set to continue Monday with no resolution in sight.
The stoppage by the majority of the 600 journalists at the network, which operates several of the most-listened information radio stations, was called in a bid to bring their salaries up to the same level as their counterparts at public broadcaster France Televisions.
Airwaves usually dedicated to round-the-clock news bulletins have been pumping out a steady diet of easy listening music, punctuated occasionally by skimpy news reads produced by freelancers brought in by management.
On Monday, one of France’s biggest unions, the CGT, reaffirmed its intention to keep the strike up as long as necessary, and said French Culture and Communications Minister Jean-Jacques Aillagon “would be advised to respond to the questions and demands of the journalists’ union collective.”
The government has thus far refused to name a mediator to calm the dispute.The journalists were due to hold a meeting later Monday to decide whether to pursue their action.
