BORDEAUX, France, March 1 (AFP) – Thousands of lorries remained stranded across southwest France Monday as a result of heavy snow which has forced the closure of a principal crossing-point to Spain.
Some 2,500 lorries were backed up on 22 kilometres (14 miles) of the motorway leading to the Biriatou frontier post, officals said. A similar number were parked in lay-bys and service stations further north.
The frontier post opened overnight allowing some 3,000 goods vehicles through, but it was shut again before dawn as a result of fresh snowfalls on the Spanish side of the border.
