Polish skier dies in French Alps fall

CHAMONIX, France, March 30 (AFP) – A Polish cross-country skier was found dead Tuesday in the French Alps after suffering a fatal fall into a crevice near Mont Blanc, police said.

The man, who was reported missing late Monday, was skiing with three other Poles at an altitude of about 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) when he passed over a snow bridge that collapsed underneath him and then buried him.

His friends, who had skied ahead of him, alerted police when the victim failed to catch up.

Police were unable to recover the body on Tuesday, as a helicopter transporting equipment to break the ice encasing the body could not land near the hard-to-reach area due to poor weather conditions.
