Paris gets new bridge – number 37

PARIS, July 13, 2006 (AFP) – Paris took official possession Thursday of its 37th bridge over the river Seine – a wood and steel passageway at the eastern end of the city that is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

Named after philosopher and writer Simone de Beauvoir, the footbridge was inaugurated by Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe, who praised in his address the “technological prowess” of Austrian architect Dietmar Feichtinger.

The bridge takes the shape of two gently inverted arcs and has no central supporting pillar.

The capital’s fourth walkway over the Seine, the Simone de Beauvoir bridge links the National Library of France (BNF) to the Bercy park.
