New French government unveiled at 7pm

Published on 31/03/2004

PARIS, March 31 (AFP) - The new centre-right government of Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin will be unveiled at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, President Jacques Chirac's press service announced.

The highly anticipated announcement comes three days after Chirac’s governing Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) was soundly defeated by the Socialist-led left-wing opposition in regional polls.

A major cabinet shake-up was expected, with popular Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy tipped to take over the finance ministry to oversee the government’s controversial programme of economic reform.
