Leading I Coast author dies in France

LYON, France, Dec 11 (AFP) – Ahmadou Kourouma, Ivory Coast’s leading novelist, died in a French hospital here Thursday where he had been admitted for surgery for a benign tumour three weeks ago, his widow said.

The 76-year-old was the author of “The Suns of Independence”, “Waiting for the Vote of the Wild Animals” and the still untranslated “Allah n’est pas oblige” (Allah is not Bound), which won France’s Renaudot literary price in 2000.

His novels are satires on the ills of modern African states. He had been living in Lyon, eastern France since Ivory Coast erupted into civil war following a failed coup in September 2002.
