French teachers strike

PARIS, March 12 (AFP) - French teachers took the baton in a week of anti-government protests Friday, staging strikes and demonstrations nine days ahead of mid-term regional elections.
Around 20 percent of school teachers stopped work, and were joined at protest rallies around the country by public sector researchers who are also demanding more money from the centre-right government.
On Thursday hospital staff were on strike, and on Saturday performing artists are to protest against reforms to their unemployment benefit system.The regional elections on March 21 and 28 are seen as an important test for Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin.
