CHAMBERY, France, Feb 17 (AFP) - A seven-year-old girl who was crushed by a moving walkway in a French ski resort on the weekend died because a safety device was turned off either by accident or on purpose, the prosecutor in the case said Tuesday.
The French child, named Agathe Jouin, died Saturday as her family watched in horror when she was half-swallowed at the end of the moving carpet which served to transport skiers up to a lift in the Alpine village of Cal-Cenis.
The prosecutor, Henri Perret, told AFP that the safety device that would normally have stopped the walkway had been turned off.
“The manager for the ski lifts told the press that the safety mechanism set itself off several times a day,” he said, adding that 35 people involved with the system were being questioned to find out if forgetfulness, negligence or wilful disregard was behind the mechanism’s non-operation.
