French rocker in actress murder case trial soon
VILNIUS, Feb 19 (AFP) - The Lithuanian public prosecutor has received the results of a criminal inquiry into French singer Bertrand Cantat over the death of his girlfriend, French actress Marie Trintignant after a violent row in a Vilnius hotel room last year, the Vilnius court said on Thursday.
Vladas Nikitinas, the head of the criminal department at the Vilnius district court, said that the judges for the trial would be named by the middle of next week.
Virginijus Papirtis, Cantat’s Lithuanian lawyer, told public radio that the hearings could start in a month’s time.
Cantat, the 39-year-old lead singer of the group Noir Desir, has been charged with murder for causing the death of Trintignant by beating her during a fatal hotel room row at Vilnius’ Domina Plaza hotel where they were staying.
The 41-year-old actress, who had been in Lithuania to work on a French tele-movie, died August 1 of swelling to the brain, nearly a week after having the row with Cantat.
The singer, who claimed Trintignant fell and hit her head during the argument, was taken into custody immediately after and has spent the time in jail pending the outcome of the criminal probe.
