PARIS, Nov 24 (AFP) – The French prosecutor’s office said Monday it will appeal against the five-year jail term handed down on Alfred Sirven, a former senior executive of the oil group Elf convicted of corruption earlier this month.
During the mass trial of 37 Elf defendants, the prosecutor had asked for an eight-year sentence for Sirven. In the French legal system the state as well as a defendant has the right to appeal.
Sirven was found guilty of embezzling money from a multi-billion dollar slush-fund which he ran to promote Elf interests in the early 1990s.
Two other top executives, Loik Le Floch-Prigent and Andre Tarallo, were also given jail terms on November 12.
