French probe into airliner near miss over Reims

PARIS, Feb 20 (AFP) – French authorities said Friday they had opened an inquiry into a near miss by two passenger aircraft over eastern France earlier this week.

A spokeswoman for the government’s Bureau of Aviation Investigation and Analysis said the probe was started after being notified by the control tower in Reims, the French city over which the close call happened early Wednesday.

Two planes, one belonging to Swiss and the other to KLM, found themselves in dangerous proximity as they were flying over the city.

Fast action by the pilots and automatic warnings systems averted a disaster and both planes made it to their destinations safely.
