French poll support for US in Iraq rises

PARIS, Dec 17 (AFP) – French support for the US and British occupation of Iraq has climbed slightly since the capture of Saddam Hussein but still remains overwhelmingly sceptical, according to a poll to be published in the Thursday edition of the French newspaper Le Parisien.

Asked whether they now supported the military action to depose Saddam’s regime, 37 percent of the 1,004 adults in the poll answered yes, compared to 31 percent in favour in April, when the war broke out.

But 57 percent of respondents, who were questioned after the weekend arrest of Saddam, said they believed his capture “would change nothing” for Iraq’s situation. In April, the figure was 40 percent.
