French officials to visit Guantanamo

PARIS, Jan 16 (AFP) – French foreign ministry officials will visit the US military base at Guantanamo, Cuba, next week to meet six French nationals detained there since they were captured in Afghanistan, a ministry spokesman said Friday.

Diplomatic sources said the mission, the third of its kind, was expected to leave Paris this weekend so as to be ready to start work on Monday.

“Like two previous missions, which went there just after the prisoners arrived, this team is due to meet the six French detainees and to consult with them,” spokesman Herve Ladsous said.

The two earlier missions visited Guantanamo in early 2002.
