PARIS, Jan 26 (AFP) – France on Monday warned its nationals travelling to Asian countries battling outbreaks of bird flu to avoid all contact with poultry and hogs during their stay.
Foreign ministry spokesman Herve Ladsous advised all citizens planning trips to Asia to consult the ministry’s web site for updated travel advisories.
France could make additional recommendations based on research conducted by the World Health Organization about the source of the infection and the risk of transmission of the virus through human contact, he told reporters.
The bird flu crisis tightened its grip on Asia Monday, as Thailand said up to six people had died of the virus and new outbreaks were reported in Pakistan, South Korea and Laos.
Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Taiwan have also been hit by the disease, with six deaths reported in Vietnam. The outbreaks have mostly affected poultry, killing or forcing the slaughter of more than 20 million chickens.
