EDF staff committeeraided by French fraud squad

PARIS, April 27 (AFP) – French police early Tuesday were carrying out a raid on the workers’ council headquarters of state electricity giant Electricite de France (EDF) as part of an inquiry into alleged embezzlement, a source close to the affair said.

An investigating judge, Jean-Marie D’Huy, arrived at the councils’ headquarters in the Paris suburb of Montreuil accompanied by police from the financial crime division, LCI news television reported.

Investigators since February have been looking into alleged “abuse of confidence, fraud, forgery and use of forgery” at the workers’ council, judicial sources have said.

The council at EDF, a mammoth company with a near-monopoly on the electricity supply in France, is staffed by 5,000 workers and is the country’s wealthiest, handling an annual budget of EUR 400 million (USD 500 million). 

National law requires that both employer and employees contribute to a company council’s operating fund.
