PARIS, June 1 (AFP) – The Paris airport authority could allow workers to return to the parts of Terminal 2E at Charles de Gaulle airport that did not collapse last month “in the coming weeks”, an airport official said Tuesday.
Airport deputy director Francois Charritat told AFP that “the main part of the terminal and the pathway” leading to the departures area, where part of the roof collapsed on May 23, “could be reopened to personnel in the coming weeks”.
Charritat, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting on road safety being held at the airport, however noted that the eventual reopening of the buildings would be subject to the approval of regional authorities.
Four people were killed and three slightly hurt on May 23 when a 3O-meter (100-foot) section of roof collapsed in the departures area of the ultra-modern Terminal E, a 650-metre tubular building.
The next day, when new cracking noises were heard in the building similar to those that preceded the deadly roof collapse, regional officials ordered a full evacuation.
When asked when the terminal could reopen to passengers, Charritat said fresh security inspections were required, and would probably take place in the autumn.
