PARIS, May 11, 2007 (AFP) – France’s highest court of appeal on Thursday upheld a conviction against former foreign minister Roland Dumas for fraudulently benefiting from the sale of works of art by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.
The Cour de Cassation also confirmed Dumas’s suspended prison sentence of one year and a fine of 150,000 euros (202,000 dollars) which were ordered by a lower court last year.
As executor of Giacometti’s widow’s estate, Dumas, 84, was found guilty of colluding with top art auctioneer Jacques Tajan in illegalities during the sale of 14 sculptures and four paintings in 1994. Tajan was also convicted.
The pair have been ordered to pay 850,000 euros to the Alberto and Annette Giacometti Foundation.
Giacometti, who lived much of his life in Paris, died in 1966.
