China’s Hu thanks Chirac for stand against Taiwan
BEIJING, March 31 (AFP) - Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday thanked his French counterpart Jacques Chirac for the French government's adherence to the "one-China" policy regarding Taiwan, state media reported.
“One-China” refers to Beijing’s official position that there is only one China which encompasses both Taiwan and the mainland.
Hu made the remark while talking to the French president by telephone, state television said.
Chirac earlier said a Taiwan referendum on the relationship with the mainland was “dangerous” and “irresponsible.”
The referendum, held alongside presidential elections on the island earlier this month, was defeated because not enough Taiwanese voters cast their ballot.
