Bush calls Chirac ‘to thank France’ over Haiti

PARIS, March 2 (AFP) – Presidents Jacques Chirac of France and George W. Bush of the United States praised their countries’ cooperation in the effort to restore order in Haiti during a telephone conversation Tuesday, Chirac’s spokeswoman said.

“President Bush telephoned the president of the republic to express his pleasure at the excellent Franco-American cooperation and to thank France for its action,” Catherine Colonna said.

France took the diplomatic lead in the Haitian crisis, being the first to call for an international peace force and the resignation of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Since Monday France and the United States both have troops in the capital Port-au-Prince.
