British correspondent Paul Webster dies in Paris

PARIS, March 1 (AFP) – Paul Webster, veteran correspondent in France for the British daily The Guardian, died on Friday of a heart attack at his home in the Paris suburbs, his family said Monday.

Born in Coventry, England in 1937, Webster worked as a journalist in Africa and Australia before representing The Guardian in Paris for 25 years from 1974. In the last years of his life he was correspondent for the Sunday newspaper The Observer.

He wrote a highly-admired history of wartime Vichy France called “Petain’s crime” as well as a critical biography of late president Francois Mitterrand.

His most successful book was a biography of the pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery, which was translated into ten languages.Webster leaves a wife and three children.
