Bomb deactivated at home of Corsican judge

AJACCIO, France, Feb 28, 2007 (AFP) – Corsican bomb squads on Wednesday de-activated an explosive device planted at the front door of a judge’s home in the northern town of Bastia, a military police source said.

“It was an attempted assassination, even though apparently a small explosives charge was used,” the source said.

Police threw up a security cordon around the home of judge Michel Huyette of the Bastia appeals court to de-activate the slow-burning 150-gramme bomb.

It was Huyette’s wife who spotted the bomb hidden in a bag.

The Mediterrean island of Corsica has been plagued by more than 30 years of low-level violence waged by separatists opposed to French rule.
