Angry French scientists protest funding

Published on 30/01/2004

PARIS, Jan 29 (AFP) - Thousands of scientific researchers marched in Paris and several other French cities on Thursday to demand more funding for public-sector laboratories.

The biggest turnout was in Paris, where according to organisers 10,000 people took part, walking in freezing weather from the Jussieu University on the Left Bank to the prime minister’s office. Police put the total at 3,000.

About 500 rallied in Bordeaux and smaller gatherings, of several dozen people, took place in Nancy and Toulouse.

The demonstrations are part of a movement launched last year to draw attention to budget constrictions that, say critics, are causing ideas and talent to leave France and head abroad, mainly to North America.
