Plane crash memorial unveiled

3 May 2004

UEBERLINGEN – A memorial to 71 people who died in a mid-air plane crash over Germany almost two years ago was inaugurated at a ceremony Monday attended by relatives of the victims.

Most of the victims in the collision between a Russian charter jet and a Boeing cargo plane were teenagers and children from the Russian semi-autonomous republic of Bashkortostan.

Baden-Wuerttemberg state premier Erwin Teufel and a government delegation from the republic also attended the ceremony at the southern town of Ueberlingen near Lake Constance.

The monument consists of giant steel balls portraying a broken pearl necklace.

A Swiss air traffic control agency has acknowledged lapses which led to the collision near the Swiss-German border on the night of 1 July 2002 between the Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev 154 and Boeing 757 cargo plane.
