ZAGREB – Germany has issued an international arrest warrant for former Yugoslav and Croatian intelligence boss Josip Perkovic over the murder in Germany of a Croat dissident in the 1980s, Croatian media said Friday.
According to the reports, German police officials in Wiesbaden charged Perkovic, 60, with conspiracy to commit murder of Stjepan Djurekovic in 1983 in the town of Wolfratshausen, Germany.
In 1983, Perkovic was one of the top spies of the former Yugoslav secret service SDS, better known by its earlier name UDBA, the activities of which included hunting down and assassinating Yugoslav dissidents worldwide.
Stjepan Djurekovic, a dissident who escaped from communist Yugoslavia, was one of the UDBA’s victims.
Perkovic continued in intelligence activities even after the break up of Yugoslavia in 1991.
Media speculated that Perkovic was called upon by the late Croatian president Franjo Tudjman, because Tudjman needed intelligence personnel with experience despite Petkovic’s questionable past.
It was not immediately clear if or when Petkovic will be arrested. He is currently retired and is living in Croatia.
