INGOLSTADT – Audi, a unit of Volkswagen Group, said Monday it again sold more cars in 2003 than the year before, marking a decade of increases.

Sales were strong in China, Japan and Britain and the success of the new A3 boosted total units, the company said.

Audi sold 3.7 percent more cars – 769,893 for the full year. The company’s home market, Germany, proved disappointing, with 237,786 cars sold, down 2.4 percent. Currently 69 percent of Audis are exported. In China, sales surged 71.5 percent to 63,531 units.

A spokesman said sales of the A3 were up 20 percent since the launch of the new model. Sales of the luxury Lamborghini marque tripled to 1,305 thanks to a new model, the Gallardo.

”This year we want to lift sales and set an another straight annual sales record,” said a spokesman at company headquarters in Ingolstadt.
