German coalition breakthrough ‘good for Europe’: France

A deal that paves the way towards a new coalition government in Germany between Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the Social Democrats is “good for Europe,” the French government said on Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron has been eyeing the talks anxiously, hoping to see a government emerge that will swing behind his plans for deepening ties between members of the eurozone as well as the 28-member European Union.

“This agreement is good for Germany, good for France and above all good for Europe,” French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

“And it’s an important step for stability and for the future of relations between France and Germany, but above all for the future of Europe in the months and years to come,” he said.
