Prison sentence confirmed for fishermen in Iran

24 January 2006

PARIS – The French foreign ministry said Tuesday that a French national and a German citizen have been sentenced to 18 months by a court in Iran for allegedly sailing into Iranian waters in the Gulf.

Foreign ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei told journalists in Paris that the French embassy in Tehran had been officially notified of the sentences by the Iranian foreign ministry.

The case goes back to November 29, when German tradesman Donald Klein, 52, and a French boat owner identified only as Stephane set out from Dubai for a day’s fishing and ended up under arrest after apparently going too far.

The statement by the foreign ministry in Paris confirmed last week’s declaration by Klein’s wife to a German radio station.
