BERLIN – Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the new foreign minister who had Wednesday accompanied Merkel to Paris for a meeting with President Jacques Chirac and to Brussels to meet E.U. and NATO leaders, announced Thursday he would fly to Washington next Tuesday.

Steinmeier spokesman Martin Jaeger said the foreign minister would first stop off in New York to meet U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and leaders of Jewish organizations.

On Tuesday Steinmeier is to meet U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington. No meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush is planned.

Steinmeier, who pledged continuity in German foreign policy on taking office, met his Estonian counterpart, Urmas Paet, in Berlin Thursday morning.

Steinmeier was then to board a flight to the Netherlands, where he was to meet Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot in The Hague.

On Friday, a meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini was scheduled in Rome, followed by one with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos in Madrid.

Reports in Berlin said the E.U. budget was likely to be the main topic at all of Steinmeier’s meetings.

On Wednesday, Steinmeier accompanied newly elected Chancellor Angel Merkel on her trip to Paris and Brussels.
