WOLFSBURG – For the first time ever, Volkswagen sold more cars in China last year than in Germany, the company announced Wednesday.
Taking advantage of the world’s fastest-growing car market, Volkswagen sold a total 697,961 VWs and Audis in China in 2003.
That was up a whopping 36 percent from 2002, a corporate spokesman in Wolfsburg said.
The total included 633,000 VWs and 64,000 Audis.
On the domestic market, struggling against a strong euro and an economic downturn, Europe’s biggest car-maker sold 519,500 vehicles in Germany in 2003. Of those, 237,786 were Audis.
