BERLIN – A Libyan businessman was given a suspended 18-month prison sentence by a court in Berlin Tuesday for attempted illegal military purchases in Germany.
The 61-year-old man from Tripoli admitted trying to acquire 660 tons of missile fuel and spare parts for military vehicles between 1996 and 1998 in contravention of UN sanctions against Libya.
The attempted USD 270 million deal via German middlemen was uncovered at an early stage and did not lead to firm orders, the court was told.
Three Germans were handed suspended jail sentence by a court in October 2000 for their parts in the affair.
